In August, Kylie Jenner revealed, via Instagram, that she had crafted “the perfect nude lipstick for darker skin tones.”

Now, if you are a woman of color, you know that items marketed as nude are rarely nude on us, so Kiley’s claim had many a makeup-lover intrigued.
One Black Beauty Vlogger, Shanygne Maurice of Too Much Mouth, decided to put the claim to the test. She tried Kylie’s “perfect nude for darker skin tones,” and  felt that the color did not flatter her.

Here’s where things got bizarre. Rather than stand in solidarity with yet another woman of color whose skin color has been excluded from a cosmetics campaign, youtube viewers, many of them Black, began leaving comments telling the
Shanygne she is too dark for the lipstick.  Despite Kiley’s clear assertion that the shade was meant for darker skin tones, these women shamed Shanygne, asserting that she should have know the lipstick was not intended for her “too dark” skin.
See for yourself:

Well I keep going back and forth somewhere between this is funny and this is really sad. Funny that these are the lengths people are willing to go to try and hurt someone’s feelings and sad that some people are still so ignorant that they think someone’s skin tone is an insult. As for the you should’ve known it wouldn’t work for you or try finding the right color comments, that to me just shows me that you have no originality or artistic ability so you just go with the “makeup rules” that say this skin tone looks best in this and that skin tone should avoid this. A creative person, someone who doesn’t follow the crowd knows how to make things work for themselves so no I didn’t know better because I knew whether it was perfect like she claimed or not I could still make it work.
